VERSANT CUSTOMER CARNEGIE GROUP AWARDED BEST DISTRIBUTED OBJECT APPLICATION AT OBJECT WORLD WEST

AT&T Named Finalist in Competition for Best Object Applications

MENLO PARK, Calif., - September 3, 1996 - Versant Object Technology (NASDAQ: VSNT) today announced that its customer Carnegie Group was awarded the Best Distributed Application distinction in Computerworld's Object Application Award, held in conjunction with Object World West. In addition, AT&T was honored as a finalist for its application based on the Versant ODBMS.

The applications featured are winners of a comprehensive competition for the best use of object technology in deployed applications. Entries were judged on a variety of criteria, including ease of use; ease of development and maintenance; information access; innovation; and tangible benefits.

"The continued success of Versant customers in deploying strategic applications with quantifiable benefits further demonstrates that Versant is the leading database for complex business applications," said Robert Freeman, vice president of marketing for Versant. "Carnegie Group and AT&T are perfect examples of the maturity of the Versant solution and their ability to partner with us for joint success."

Carnegie Group developed the TRAC2ES application for U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), the federal military command responsible for all military transportation, who sought to implement an optimum system for the movement and care of each soldier and all military personnel requiring medical treatment. The application is a decision support system that plans and monitors the movement and care of U.S. military patients anywhere in the world. The Versant database manages a complex data model to track patients in real time throughout transit and reduce costs. Carnegie Group selected Versant for its rich support for data sharing, data distribution and high performance, as well as the ability to provide wide area network support as a distributed database.

AT&T was named a Best Distributed Application finalist for The General Purpose Collector, its application based on the Versant ODBMS. This internal collection system is responsible for processing and reconciling all internal voice service records for the large telecommunications supplier and allows the firm to deploy new services more quickly than in the past. The application has reduced overall project development time and expenses by at least 50 percent.
